Something old, something new, as 2022 Orange Wine Show award winners revealed

September 29, 2022

By David Fitzsimons

Two wineries - Swinging Bridge and Byrne Farm - have dominated the 2022 Orange Wine Show awards.

The winner of the region’s best cellar door was Swinging Bridge Wines on the Escort Way.

It was one of seven trophies the winery collected including Best Red Wine of the Show (2021 Caldwell Lane Pinot Noir), Best Exhibitor of the Show, Best Older Chardonnay (2017 Hill Park) and Best Pinot Noir (2021 Caldwell Lane).

Judging of the cool climate area’s top drops took place this month.

Veteran winemaker Tom Ward from Swinging Bridge said he was happiest about the acknowledgement for best cellar door.

Byrne Farm, one of Orange’s newest wineries, has claimed the region’s top prize, with its latest white being named the best wine of the 2022 Orange Wine Show.

Cargo Road Nashdale-based Byrne Farms took out the top prize with its 2021 Chardonnay.

All up it won four awards - Best Wine of the Show, Best White Wine of the Show, Best Young Wine of the Show and Best Single Vineyard.

Canadian Jeff Byrne established the winery with wife Bridgette, planting the first block of vines in 2020, after leaving the beachside suburb of Stockton in Newcastle.

Chairman of Judges, Adam Walls, said the quality from the region’s wineries was high across the board.

“Sparkling was very good and generally is a strong suit of Orange wine,” he said.

“Riesling and chardonnay were also strong this year, chardonnay has always performed well in Orange; the work that has gone into vineyards is very evident from the quality of the chardonnay, but it’s great to see more people doing Riesling and seeing how winemakers adapt to this is exciting.

“The cooler red vintage of ’21 made for some bright, mid-way reds with pinot winning the reds. Wine makers in the region are very excited about pinot and this year’s entries were the best pinots I’ve seen out of Orange.”
