Leisurely lunch for 300 in the middle of the street set to continue as Food Week DA lodged

Orange’s newest public food extravaganza, the Sampson Street Long Lunch, is set to become an annual fixture for Food Week.
Organisers are seeking approval from Orange City Council to run the event for the next five years.
The event involves Sampson Street between Summer and Byng streets being closed for six hours to allow 300 paying guests to dine in the middle of the tree-lined avenue, with regional food prepared by some of Orange’s leading chefs.
Food Week organisers have lodged a development application for the event to run on Saturday April 2 this year; March 25, 2023; April 6, 2024; and on unspecified dates in March or April 2025 and 2026.
The DA says the event would run from noon to 6pm and see the street closed to traffic, including residents’ access.

“Prior to the event and during the setup there will be resident vehicle access,” it says.
“On completion of the event full access of Sampson Street will be restored to residents.
“Given the success of [the event in] 2021 we anticipate the event will run very similarly.”
It said Food Week had already delivered two letters to each affected household updating them on the street closure plan.
The public has until Friday March 18 to comment on the proposal.
