UPDATED. January 5, 2022: Concerns as case numbers triple in Western NSW

Numbers soaring.

Eight people have died in NSW from Covid-related illness, as positive Covid case numbers in the state and across the west of NSW skyrocket.


Up to 8pm on Tuesday, January 4, there were 35,054 new cases of Covid in NSW, up from 23,131.


There were 1,491 people in hospital (up from 1,344) and 119 in ICU (up from 105). In the Western NSW Local Health District there were 16 people in hospital, including two in ICU.


In the 24-hour period 108,844 tests were conducted across the state (up from 83,376).

Up to 8pm last night there were 501 new cases - more than triple the previous day - identified in the following local government areas in the Western NSW Local Health District:


Bathurst - 49 (up from 4) Blayney - 12 (up from 5) Bogan - 2 Bourke - 4 Brewarrina - 5 Cabonne - 17 (up from 5) Cobar - 2 Coonamble - 8 Cowra - 9 Dubbo - 169 Forbes - 15 (up from 3) Gilgandra - 8 Lachlan - 2 Mid-Western - 34 (up from 3) Narromine - 19 Oberon - 1 Orange - 83 (up from 64) Parkes - 18 (up from 7) Walgett - 4 Warren - 15 Warrumbungle - 22 Weddin - 3
