January 4, 2022: Covid cases in Orange rise by 50 percent; long queues at Wade Park

Covid cases in Orange have risen from 42 to 64 in the 24-hour period to 8pm last night.


There were 150 new cases identified in the following local government areas (LGA) in the Western NSW Local Health District:

Bathurst - 4 Blayney - 5 Bourke - 1 Cabonne - 5 Cobar - 2 Coonamble - 5 Cowra - 6 Dubbo - 29 Forbes - 3 Lachlan - 4 Mid-Western - 3 (inc 1 with Mudgee addresses) Narromine - 1 Orange - 64 Parkes - 7 Walgett - 5 Warren - 3 Warrumbungle - 3

The Orange News Examiner counted about 80 cars waiting in line just just before midday.


The queue stretched along Moulder Street and then up to the outdoor tennis courts on the corner of Peisley and Warrendine streets.

Two deaths were recorded in NSW in the 24-hour period.


A man in his 90s from Western Sydney died at Westmead Hospital; he had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

A man in his 70s from the Newcastle area died at John Hunter Hospital. He was a resident of the Kilpatrick Court aged care facility in Toronto, where he acquired his infection. He had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.



There were 83,376 tests conducted in the 24-hour period (down from 96,765), and 23,131 total new cases (up from 20,794).


There were 1,344 people in hospital (up from 1,204) and 105 people in ICU (up from 95).
