Dozens of jobs in peril as Orange Private Hospital goes into voluntary administration

Three days after The Orange News Examiner reported exclusively on troubles at Orange Private Hospital, the business has been placed into voluntary administration.
David Kennedy, Morgan Kelly and Robyn Duggan of EY (Ernst & Young) were appointed as Voluntary Administrators of Orange Private Hospital Pty Ltd (OPH) on Tuesday (May 23, 2023).
"The Administrators’ primary objective is to secure a longer-term future for the organisation, if possible," said Ernst & Young.
The hospital employs 64 staff in addition to 32 surgeons, who operate out of the seven-theatre facility.
“We understand these are uncertain times for employees, doctors and patients of Orange Private Hospital," said EY partner David Kennedy.
"Our priorities are the continuation of services at the hospital and to ensure any disruption is minimised. We will be conducting an expression of interest campaign to achieve a recapitalisation or sale of the hospital.
"We are committed to having regular and clear communication with doctors, employees, patients and the local community."
On Saturday The Orange News Examiner contacted one of the owners of Orange Private Hospital, Dr Bill Mackie, to put to him questions about the hospital.
“We have been going through a process looking for further investment, or possible sale, but that’s not complete yet," he said.
Asked if it had been a struggle to fill some staffing positions, he said: “It has been for the last two years, attracting staffing. There is a shortage of nursing staff right through the system, public and private.
“We've had a very difficult two years … otherwise we wouldn’t be looking for new investors and the possibility of even selling part or all of the hospital. I think the staff have been aware of that, that’s been the plan to keep things going.”
